Inducted: 1982

The UBC rowing team was based out of the Vancouver Rowing Club during the late 1950’s and early 1960’s.  A number of rowers on the teams that were involved in international events were from the Okanagan.  Specifically, the five individuals named above.

Don Arnold: Born in Kelowna, B.C. on July 14th 1935, Arnold a member of the four-oared UBC/VRC men’s coxless fours team which won the gold medal in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia (The team also set a world record over 2,000 metres at the Olympic Trials).  Two years later, in 1958, at the British Empire Games in Wales, Arnold was on the coxed fours team that won a silver medal and the eights team that won the gold.  In 1960, he was in the #2 seat of the UBC/VRC eights which won a silver medal at the Summer Olympics in Rome.

Nelson Kuhn: Born in Whitemouth, Manitoba, on July 7th 1938, Kuhn grew-up in Vernon, B.C. and was on the UBC/VRC men’s eights that won the silver medal at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome.

Glen Mervyn: Born in Vancouver, B.C. on February 17th 1937, Mervyn was a member of the UBC/VRC eights team that won the gold medal at the 1958 British Empire Games in Wales. He was also with the eights team that competed at the Pan American Games in 1959 winning a silver medal and stroked the UBC/VRC team to a silver medal win at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome.  Mervyn was pairs coach at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics where the pairs won the gold medal.  Glen Mervyn died in Kelowna on March 18th 2000 after a long battle with cancer.

Carlton Ogawa: Born in 1934, Ogawa was a member of the UBC/VRC men’s eights that won the silver medal at the Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. 

Donald Wayne Pretty: Born June 11th 1936, Pretty was a member of the UBC/VRC men’s eights that won the silver medal at the Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia.  He was also with the team again to win the gold medal eights at the 1958 British Empire Games in Wales.
