JOIN AS A VOLUNTEER

The Museum and Archives of Vernon strives to engage community members, researchers and visitors in the dynamic, varied history and heritage of the Greater Vernon area. We are looking for volunteers in the following areas:

  • Archival Detective (Archives)
  • Treasure Hunter (Collections)
  • Set Designer (Exhibits)
  • Social Butterfly (Front Desk)
  • Molder of Minds (Education)
  • Jack/Jill of All Trades (Carpentry, Repairs)
  • Fast Fingers (Data Entry)
  • Don’t see a description that describes you? Bring us your ideas!

In addition to the above positions, there are currently some specialized opportunities available with the collections team. Please review the below list and if one of them interests you, please write in your selection next to ‘other’ on the volunteer application form.

Research
The collections department is always seeking volunteer researchers. A volunteer researcher will review our collection, then dive into our archives and other resources to assemble a body of knowledge. This will help us understand what we have in our collection already, and shape future exhibitions. Some research projects might just take a day, some will take weeks. A good volunteer researcher will be well schooled in Googling, able to learn our collection database software, organized, and be able to find and summarize narratives within their research. However, they don’t have to come with any preexisting knowledge on the topics! This is a role that can be done from home and on site. We are looking for help with the following collections:

  • Boy Scouts
  • Cameras
  • Fashion
  • War
  • Toys/Dolls

Inventories
We have over 20 000 objects in the Vernon Museum, from ball gowns to cannon balls! The collections department is in the middle of completing a large inventory. Volunteers will compare what we have on the shelf to our database, update records and record locations. A good inventory volunteer will have attention to detail and be able to handle objects with care. They will enjoy working largely unsupervised. They will need to be able to learn our collection database software, and so a basic familiarity with computers is required.

Photography
In the backrooms of our museums we have thousands and thousands of objects, but only a fraction of them have been photographed. Photographs help us locate objects, and make it easier to share what we have. We are looking for volunteers to come in weekly and photograph our collection. The right person for this role would be familiar with a camera, familiar with image files (nothing fancy, just renaming them, copying and pasting them) and very basic photo editing. They would enjoy working mostly unsupervised and be willing to learn more about safe object handling.

Complete the volunteer form below and let us know your interests and availability, and we’ll see how we can best engage your skills!
