The Fossil Guy

Speaker Series with Bob O’Donnell “The Fossil Guy”

The Vernon Museum and the Vernon Branch of the OHS are excited to welcome “The Fossil Guy” to the Hometown Histories Speaker Series.

The Vernon Museum and the Vernon Branch of the Okanagan Historical Society are excited to welcome Bob O’Donnell—known to many as “The Fossil Guy”—for a fun and fascinating installment of the Hometown Histories Speaker Series. The presentation will take place on Saturday, August 23, at 1:00 PM at the Vernon Museum (3009 32nd Avenue) and is suitable for all ages.

Recently relocated to Vernon, Bob brings a lifelong passion for fossil collecting and public education to his new community. He began collecting fossils as a child during trips to Arkona, Ontario, and has since dedicated decades to sharing his knowledge through presentations, field trips, and museum work. As the former curator of the Arkona Lions Museum and Information Centre, Bob has inspired countless families to explore the natural world around them, starting with what lies beneath their feet.

This presentation marks a new direction for the Hometown Histories series. While previous talks have focused on the lives and legacies of notable people from Vernon’s past, Bob’s talk will spotlight the land itself—its deep natural history and the ancient creatures preserved in stone.
“My goal has always been to help families make memories by learning and exploring together,” says Bob. “Fossil collecting is something kids love. It’s hands-on, adventurous, and connects them to the planet in a really exciting way.”

“We’re especially thrilled to open up our speaker series to younger audiences,” said Gwyneth Evans, Archives Manager at the Museum & Archives of Vernon. “This is our first talk specifically designed to welcome children and families, but the content will be just as engaging for adults. It’s a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to connect with the natural history of our world in a fun, hands-on, and accessible way.”

Don’t miss this engaging and educational event! Join us in person at the Vernon Museum on August 23 at 1:00 PM. Tickets are $10 per adult and $7 per child, and can be purchased online.

Proceeds support both the MAV and the OHS.
